Prairie Dock

Silphium terebinthinaceum (Prairie Dock)

Silphium terebinthinaceum(Herbaceous Perennial)

In late summer, this robust perennial blooms with sunflower-like yellow flowers on eight-foot tall stalks. The big, bold, basal leaves of Prairie Dock grow 24-36 inches tall and make Prairie Dock a worthy addition to the landscape even without the summer blooms. The foliage and flowers are wonderful for arrangements. Seedheads attract finches and other songbirds.

Interesting Notes

Don't mistake this sunny looking yellow flower for a sunflower. You can tell the difference by breaking a stem to find a sap or "rosin."
